3 Facts about Maui

                               3 facts about Maui

Maui is the best fisherman ever because he caught a giant fish. It turned out to be the
North Island and his canoe became the South Island.

Maui made his fishing line out of flax and jawbone his grandfather gave him.
He sang an old karakia to strengthen the line. A karakia is a Maori prayer.

Maui’s brothers didn’t want Maui to come fishing with them because they didn’t like Maui.

I've also learned about Maui and the sun.

  1. Hi Max,

My name's Ruby and I'm one of the people who will be blogging with you this summer as part of the Summer Learning Journey. It's great to see you have made a start on the activities! Well done!

You have come up with some good facts here. I really like how you have told us what a karakia is as some people won't know that.
It's unfortunate that Maui's brothers didn't like him. Do we know why they didn't like him? I think it might be because they were jealous of him. What do you think?

Have you read any other stories about Maui? There is a really good one about how Maui brought fire to the world. Here is the link if you would like to read it:

I look forward to reading more of your blog over summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.

  2. Hi Max

My name is Allie and I am the cluster manager for our area Toki Pounamu. I was the one who came and saw you at your school.
You have made a great start to the programme.

There are some really great myths and legends out there that you can read about Maui. I am sure there will be some in your school library that you can see when you go back to school.

Maui was a real character and he challenged lots of people but most of all his brothers. He wanted to prove himself to them but had to do it in a sneaky way by hiding on board their canoe.

Great job Max, I am looking forward to reading more of your posts over the summer.

    Until next time

    Allie :)
