Writing - Matariki Reflection

Matariki Reflection

WALT: reflect on the past year and what Matariki means to us

Matariki Reflection

Matariki is a star cluster of 500 stars but only 6 of them are visible without a telescope. Matariki is a time for family to reflect on the past. Matariki Celebrations were very popular before they got stopped in 1940 then brought back in 2000. For some Iwi tribes, seeing Matariki is the mark of a new year. Matariki is 400 light-years away. Now here is my reflection.

This past year has been great and dull.

I got taught a lesson when my family went into Lockdown. It has been really boring and annoying with my sister screaming about Barbies all the time. So when I get out of Lockdown I want to give new opportunities a go.

My family hasn't had many milestones this year. I’ve got two new cousins. One is 6 months old and the other one is two weeks old. I haven’t seen them in person yet but I hope I will soon. Another milestone was that my Nana and Pop had their 40th Wedding Anniversary. They had dinner for it but my parents said it was probably going to be too boring for me so I had to stay behind with my cousin’s babysitter. I did get to go to my other cousin’s engagement party the next day though!

The past year has been pretty good. Near the start of the year my family was at Spencer Park for Christmas and the New Year in Grandad’s new motorhome. It was really fun, they had a big bouncy pillow and a waterslide pretty much everyday. One highlight of the year was meeting some of the Black Caps. My mum had put me in the draw to get to go to a skills session with the Black Caps. My Pop took me because he used to play cricket too. I got some of their signatures as well.

In conclusion, the year has been pleasant and boring . Covid-19 has sucked a lot though because I have been missing my friends and family.

  1. Hi Max,
It seems you have had a lot to celebrate in your family lately - exciting times. I completely get your boredom over lockdown, but in this case it is all for our own good. Thanks for giving me a giggle at the end of your quite formally written reflection...you summed it up nicely. Covid-19 has sucked :)
